What an “autodialer” is, in plain English
An autodialer (lawyers call it an “ATDS,” short for automatic telephone dialing system) is technology that dials or texts phone numbers automatically, without a person dialing each one by hand. The federal TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) generally bars companies from using an autodialer or a prerecorded/artificial voice to call or text your cell phone unless you gave them permission first. It also lets you collect $500 to $1,500 per illegal call or text.
Because the TCPA is a federal law, this protection follows you in every state. On top of it, many states have their own telemarketing and robocall statutes. Some add stricter calling-hour limits, their own do-not-call lists, or extra penalties. Your state page below covers the local details; the federal law is the backbone everywhere.
Short version: you don’t have to figure out which law applies. If illegal calls hit your phone, tell us what happened and Max sorts out the federal and state angles for you, free.
